1. Истинное значение величины неизвестно, его применяют только в теоретических исследованиях.
2. На практике используют действительное значение величины хд, в результате чего погрешность измерения Dхизм определяют по формуле
Dхизм = хизм - хд,
где хизм - измеренное значение величины.
3. Синонимом термина погрешность измерения является термин ошибка измерения, применять который не рекомендуется как менее удачный.

Разность между показанием средства измерений и истинным (действительным) значением измеряемой физической величины.
Примечания
1. Для меры показанием является ее номинальное значение.
2. Поскольку истинное значение физической величины неизвестно, то на практике пользуются ее действительным значением.
3. Приведенное определение понятия «погрешность средства измерений» соответствует определению, данному VIM-93 [1], и не противоречит формулировкам, принятым в отечественной метрологической литературе. Однако признать его удовлетворительным нельзя, так как, по сути, оно не отличается от определения понятия «погрешность измерений», поэтому необходима дальнейшая работа по усовершенствованию определения этого понятия.

1. Условно принятое значение величины называют нормирующим значением. Часто за нормирующее значение принимают верхний предел измерений.
2. Приведенную погрешность обычно выражают в процентах.
